In an interview with Prensa Latina in New York, Morales welcomed the decision adopted by Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army (FARC-EP) to enter into dialogue.
Morales said that "there is no exit for the FARC-EP through armed conflict" in that country and expressed hope that talks will lead to concrete results and the possibility of the armed group becoming a political party.
On the other hand he said that the dismissal of President Lugo in Paraguay was a coup d'etat by the Paraguayan Congress and reaffirmed Bolivia's non-recognition of the current authorities holding power in Asuncion, while dismissing the recent statements from that government regarding an alleged threat from Bolivia's military against Paraguay.
Morales also denounced the attempt by Federico Franco, who became president in place of Lugo, to use the supposed threat to try to gain legitimacy in power, and warned that with this discourse Franco is also providing a pretext for the return of U.S. military bases on Paraguayan territory .
Regarding Cuba, Morales stressed the need for the UN to honor its own agreements, which require the lifting of the half-century long U.S. blockade of Cuba.
Morales announced that he will send a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama, demanding the release of the Cuban Five imprisoned in U.S. jails.
The Five include Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez and Antonio Guerrero, who were sentenced to severe penalties for uncovering violent actions planned by anti-Cuban groups based in Miami.
Evo Morales also confirmed that early this month he talked by phone with Gerardo Hernandez, held in a maximum security prison.
It was perhaps the first contact from a head of government with a prisoner of the U.S. empire, he added.
