After all these years we are still debating and discussing what to call ourselves. If we ever get that down the Amerikan Empire will shudder!

As a Chicano of Aztlan I am of the 'lost tribe' of Chicano people and have been so since the late 60s. Chicano/Chicana/Chican@ is cumbersome. We need to look at the course content itself. It cannot be exclusively Chicano if it includes Mexican history in relation to Aztlán. We have to live with the fact that no one term can describe La Raza Cosmica. No matter what you choose someone will have a possibly legitimate gripe.

We need to evolve beyond any narrow Chicano cultural nationalism and examine the relevancy of global democratic socialism as an alternative to corporate capitalism. We are one human family of humanity.

For me the term Latino works because it includes Puerto Ricans, Cubanos and others. Latinos is the most interchangeable term for us that is now known countrywide. Above all we must not forget our native roots as descendants of the original peoples of Aztlán.

I never made a living or created a self-image off of being Chicano so I have no dog in the fight. Nor did I get secluded onto the college campus scene. There are bigger battles to be fought and more basic issues we need to address, including: creating a matrix of networks; basic literacy programs for our people (to include computer literacy and Internet Power); the development of mass media for us (see #LATISM for LAtinos In Social Media > http://www.latism.org/beta/index.php

Of course you may consider doing a local survey of gente and students in the area and be sure to get their input (not merely the intelligentsia of Chicano elites).

1. The word Latino does not include the history of Mexico and the
