By Carl Johan Calleman, Ph.D.

If our universe began in a big bang, and that is the most widely accepted scientific theory of our origins, then it has been generally assumed that the explosion expanded in an isotropic manner. That is, being evenly distributed throughout space. It would seem to be the logical conclusion. A bomb exploded in midair moves out in all directions, so surely the universe acted the same way at its inception, right? Not necessarily so, says Carl John Calleman, Mayan scholar, doctor of physical biology and author of The Purposeful Universe.

In his most recent book, Calleman says the universe is not homogeneous and never was. Instead, it has moved out along a central axis, with evolution spiraling around the axis in a form similar to the Tree of Life described in many sacred traditions. And the axis pierces right through the Milky Way galaxy and the plane of our solar system, producing the human species as the masterwork of its creation. If this is true, and the evidence is plentiful to support the theory, then it throws many of our conventional scientific assumptions out the window, and most notably Darwin’s theory of evolution through natural selection. In Calleman’s description of the universe, the long, slow and accidental evolution through random mutations described by Darwin is replaced by a dynamic theory of wave forms emanating from the central axis of the universe, or the trunk of the Cosmic Tree of Life, giving birth to new species through synchronized quantum leaps.

Calleman is presenting the most revolutionary concept of evolution since Darwin, and one that finally offers a common ground between creationism and evolutionism. In Calleman’s view, there is a divine design, so maligned by the scientific community, and there is evolution, so rejected by traditional religion. The divine essence creates the universe and allows it to evolve through its manifestation in the Tree of Life, and function biologically in the centrioles of our cells, so that one day the purpose of creation will be fulfilled.

And what might that purpose be? Calleman quotes an Islamic hadith wherein Allah says, “I was a hidden treasure and wanted to be known.” And when might the day come when knowledge of that treasure becomes common to us all? The author is unequivocal about the answer. His interpretation of the Mayan calendar says that the end of the calendar is actually on October 28, 2011 and, he states: “All that the Mayan calendar coming to an end truly means is that the highest quantum state of the universe will be attained.”

Promising words, indeed. Could it be true? This book might be viewed by scientists as balderdash and by creationists as blasphemy. But those who take the time to open their minds to what he is truly saying could see this as the inception of a new field of evolutionary study, showing how the divine source of spirituality is manifested through evolution. Either this is a bunch of Mayan nonsense riddled with unfounded science, or it is the basis of the greatest explanation of the nature of our universe. I would opt for the latter, and expect that there will come a time when the Tree of Life theory will make the ideas of Einstein and Darwin appear to be nothing more than rudimentary guesses at what Calleman is offering.

If you are at all interested in the meaning of life, the evolution of consciousness and the purpose of existence, this could well be the most purposeful book you will ever read. At times it makes the reader feel like decades of research in Mayan cosmology and a Ph.D. in cellular biology are necessary to follow its reasoning, but something as important as understanding the meaning of existence is not likely to come in an easy format. Like any evolutionary journey, reading this book takes us on a wave, riding through its ups, downs and difficulties, but in this case the journey justifies the end, which just might help us comprehend the magnificence of our lives and the transformation to come.
